COD Charges: Charge Extra for Cash on Delivery

Last updated 17 September 2026

COD charges let you charge extra for choosing cash on delivery, for example 2% of the cart plus ₹500 for shipping. The buyer pays these charges online before you ship, and the courier collects only the price of the goods. Buyers who pay online pay no COD charges at all.

Set it up

  1. Go to WooCommerce, COD Protection, COD charges and switch Charges on.
  2. Enter the COD charge as a percentage and the Shipping charge in rupees. Leave either at 0 to skip it.
  3. Under Charge for, choose Each order or Each unit (see below).
  4. Under Which products, tick the categories that should carry the charges. Sub categories are included. Tick none to charge on every cash on delivery order.
  5. If you want, rename the two lines buyers see, then press Save changes. Make sure Protection on is switched on at the top.

The Checkout preview on the right shows the exact lines a buyer will see for any cart value while you change the settings.

Each order or each unit

Each order

Charges apply once the cart holds at least one product from your chosen categories. The percentage is taken on the whole cart and the shipping charge is added once.

Example with 2% and ₹500: two laptops at ₹25,000 each and a mouse at ₹500. COD charge 2% of ₹50,500 = ₹1,010. Shipping charge ₹500. The buyer pays ₹1,510 online and the courier collects ₹50,500.

Each unit

The percentage is taken only on products from your chosen categories, and the shipping charge is added for every unit of those products.

Same cart: COD charge 2% of ₹50,000 = ₹1,000. Shipping charge 2 × ₹500 = ₹1,000. The buyer pays ₹2,000 online and the courier collects ₹50,500.

A cart without chosen products

If the cart has nothing from your chosen categories, for example only a mouse or an SSD, there are no COD charges. The order is plain cash on delivery unless an advance rule applies.

What the buyer sees

  1. At checkout, choosing cash on delivery adds COD charge (2%) and Shipping charge to the order summary, with a line explaining how much to pay online now and how much in cash.
  2. After placing the order, the pay page shows the order total, the amount to pay online and the cash amount.
  3. Once Razorpay confirms the payment, the order moves to Processing.

What you and Shiprocket see

  • The order lists both charges as their own lines, and a line Advance paid online for everything paid online.
  • The order total is the amount the courier collects, so Shiprocket imports it as cash on delivery for the goods only.
  • Charges are worked out again on the server when the order is saved, from the order itself. Nothing typed or changed in the browser can lower them.

COD charges and advance rules together

You can use both. The buyer pays the COD charges plus the advance online, and the courier collects the price of the goods minus the advance. To charge only COD charges, set the default advance to No advance in Advance rules.

Rounding: the percentage is rounded up to the next rupee, so 2% of ₹25,118.50 is charged as ₹503.
